Prof. Steve Azaiki Named Patron of Bayelsa International Film Festival, Prestigious Award Established in His Honour

The Bayelsa International Film Festival (BIFF) has recorded another milestone as Prof. Steve Azaiki, OON, former Pro-Chancellor of the Niger Delta University and founder of the Azaiki Public Library, has officially accepted to serve as Patron of the Festival.

The development was confirmed during a high-profile meeting with the festival organisers at the Azaiki Public Library in Yenagoa, where the erudite professor pledged his full support for the growth and global expansion of the festival.

In recognition of his immense contributions to education, culture, and youth development, the organisers also announced the establishment of a special award category to be named after Prof. Azaiki. The award will celebrate outstanding achievements in film and creativity, particularly works that embody knowledge, innovation, and social impact—values that the professor has consistently championed.

While addressing the organisers, Prof. Azaiki commended the vision of BIFF and expressed joy at being identified with a platform that promotes storytelling, creativity, and cultural pride. He further assured the festival team of his commitment to using his influence and networks to strengthen the initiative.

“I am honoured to be named Patron of this prestigious festival,” Prof. Azaiki said. “Film is a powerful tool for education and social transformation. Through this platform, Bayelsa and indeed Nigeria can showcase the richness of our stories to the world. I am equally humbled that an award will bear my name, and I look forward to supporting the festival in every way possible.”

The festival organisers, in their remarks, described Prof. Azaiki’s acceptance as a significant boost to the festival’s credibility and legacy. They noted that his global stature in education and development aligns perfectly with the mission of BIFF to nurture knowledge-driven creativity.

The upcoming 5th edition of the Bayelsa International Film Festival promises to be a landmark event, featuring over 100 films from across the globe, masterclasses, fashion, cultural performances, music, comedy, and the highly anticipated award and gala night. With Prof. Steve Azaiki as Patron and an award named in his honour, the festival is set to further establish itself as a leading platform for film and cultural excellence in Africa.
